Expenditure on contributory pensions stands at 11.8% of GDP

Pension spending stands at 11.8% of gross domestic product (GDP).


 

As of September 1, the monthly payroll of the Social Security contributory benefits amounted to 10,867 million euros. The year-on-year increase stands at 4.5% in homogeneous terms.

Distribution according to pension class
Three quarters of September’s contributory pension payroll went to retirement pensions, namely 72.4%, or €7,871.5 million. A total of EUR 1,833.3 million has been allocated to widows' pensions, while the payroll for permanent disability benefits amounts to EUR 983.3 million; orphan benefits to EUR 150.5 million and family benefits to EUR 28.5 million.
Of the 9,949,869 contributory pensions paid, 0.8% more than in the same month of 2021, 6,262,298 are for retirement, 2,349,822 for widowhood, 950,209 for permanent disability, 343,041 for orphanhood and 44,499 for relatives.
The number of pensioners rises above 9 million people, to 9,015,737 on September 1. Of these, 4.6 million are men and 4.4 million are women. The proportion of pensions per pensioner is 1.1 benefits per person. The main pension is the retirement pension for 6.1 million people and the widow’s pension is for 1.6 million. They are followed by those with permanent disability (944,769), orphanhood (325,708) and family support (43,754).

Average pension
The average pension of the system in September amounts to 1,092.18 euros per month. This amount, which includes the different types of pension (retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphanhood and in favour of family members), has increased in the last year by 5.4%; in homogeneous terms, by 3.7%. 
The average retirement pension of the system, for its part, stands at 1,257 euros. By system, the average retirement pension from the General System is 1,405.2 euros per month, while the lowest is registered by the Autonomous System, 836.7 euros per month. In Coal Mining, the average monthly retirement is 2,449 euros and is 1,395 euros in the Regime of the Sea. 
The average amount of new retirement increases in the system amounted in the month of August 2022 to 1,424.7 euros per month (last data).
For its part, the average widow’s pension in force in September is 780.2 euros per month.

Gender gap complements

As of September 1, 321,194 pensions have received the gender gap supplement, of which more than 93.1% are women (298,995). The average monthly amount of this supplement in the pension is 61.5 euros. Of the 321,194 supplementary pensions, 21.4% are pensioners with one child (68,638), who previously did not have access to the maternity supplement. In addition, 47.3% of the beneficiaries have two children (151,876); 20.1%, with three (64,505) and with four children, 11.3% (36,175).

This gap supplement, in force since February 2021, consists of a fixed amount, after the revaluation applied in 2022, of 28 euros per month per child, which is applied from the first child, unlike the previous maternity supplement. It is requested at the same time as the pension is requested.

Passive Classes
For its part, the monthly pension payroll of Passive Classes amounted to 1,319.5 million euros in the month of August 2022, the last data available.
The number of pensions in force amounted to 682,914, 11,574 more pensions than in the same month of the previous year (1.7% annual variation).
The Passive Class System of the State includes primarily military and civilian personnel of the General Administration of the State, the Administration of Justice, the General Courts and other constitutional or State bodies, as well as officials transferred to the autonomous communities.
