Labour market balance

Social Security has 522,000 members in the last year and exceeds 21.8 million members

The labor market adds up to 522,771 affiliates in the last twelve months, to record a total of 21,825,233 employed in the original series in November, the highest level in that month. It represents a rate of job creation of 2.5% year-on-year.
If we compare with the month of October, there are 14,358 fewer affiliates, a less pronounced decrease than that experienced in this same month in 2024 (-30.051); and that is well below the average of the period 2017-2019, prior to the pandemic.

If we deduct seasonality and the calendar effect, Social Security has added 44,734 members in November and the series exceeds 21.8 million members. In particular, it has reached 21,838,253 members, the highest level in the series. In the first eleven months, there are 474,846 more employed.

 

 

For its part, the daily affiliation has remained above 21.8 million every day uninterrupted since November 17, as well as 12 and 13.

The number of women affiliated to the Social Security continues in historically high numbers, with 10,335,245 on average in November. They are 247,902 occupied more than a year ago. The improvement in employment among women is 11.9% since before the labor reform, 2.6 points higher than that of men.

The number of foreign workers remains at its highest and exceeds the 3.1 million members. This group of workers represents 14.1% of the membership.

“Employment in Spain continues to grow at a higher rate than other European economies,” explains Elma Saiz, “and it does so continuously in sectors of high added value such as Information and Communication and Scientific and Technical Professional Activities.”

 

 

Data by age

By age, both the employment of young people and the elderly, aged 55 and over, has grown by 23% since before the labor reform, which is 12.4 percentage points more than the average, which has grown by 10.5% since then.

Highly productive sectors

In the last twelve months, most of the activities of the General Social Security System have been affiliated. This increase is particularly significant in Transport and Storage (+8%), Agriculture, Livestock, Hunting, Forestry and Fishing (+5.7%), Artistic, Recreational and Entertainment Activities (+5.1%), Water Supply (+4.8%), Construction (+4.7%) and Education (+4.1%).

It highlights the improvement in activities with high added value, such as Information and Communication (+3.3%) and Scientific and Technical Professional Activities (+3%), whose average contribution bases and level of stability is higher than the average.

With respect to October of this year, the behavior of Education (+2.27%), Health Activities (+1%), Activities of Organizations (+0.98%) Construction (+0.94%), Commerce (+0.90%) and Information and Communications (+0.78) stands out

Self-employed

The number of self-employed workers remains at record levels, above 3.4 million (RETA and SETA), with 3,424,479 self-employed workers, 38,817 more than a year ago, which represents a growth of 1.2%.

 

 

Since November 2024, the membership of self-employed workers in the Information and Communication and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities sectors has increased by 10.5% and 4.7%, respectively.

There are 24,838 new self-employed workers between the two, that is, these sectors account for 64% of the employment created in this Special Regime of Self-Employed Workers in the last year. If you add Health Activities and Social Services, which grows by 4.7%, Education, which increases by 5%, the percentage reaches 94.7% of the employment created.

Higher growth in employment than the countries around us

The labor market in Spain (+10.6%) continues to mark a higher growth rate than other European economies (Italy, +5.9%; France, +2.1%; Germany, +1.4%), with reference to data from the end of 2021, before the entry into force of the labor reform.

More stability

Since December 2021, there has been a great transformation in the types of contracts in our labor market: there are 4,211,387 more affiliates with indefinite contract and 2,155,630 less affiliates with temporary contract. There are more and more stable jobs, with more rights and better salaries. The biggest increase occurs among the indefinite with full-time indefinite contract, with 308,632 more than a year ago. While part-time contracts increase by 85,961.

 

The weight of temporary workers stands at 12.2%, compared to 30.2% in 2018. This improvement is even more remarkable among workers under 30 years of age, who have a temporary rate of 20.1% when seven years ago they had a rate higher than 53.3%.
