La Seguridad Social lanza una campaña informativa para que los progenitores soliciten las dos semanas adicionales del permiso de nacimiento y cuidado de menor

The National Social Security Institute (INSS) has launched an information campaign to inform the 365,747 parents - potentially beneficiaries of the service - that they can apply for the additional two weeks of childbirth and care allowance, from 1 January 2026 until the child reaches the age of eight.

By sending emails and SMS - for those parents who do not have an email - the INSS provides information on how to submit the application for extension of the birth permit, in addition to accompanying a link to a specific website (https://cloud.inss.mkcld.seg-social.es/semanas-adicionales-por-nacimiento-y-cuidado) with the detailed keys to make the application.

In addition to the sending of the email, from December 1 to 10, and the sending of the SMS today, the INSS has prepared informative posters that will be distributed in the Social Security Care and Information Centers (CAISS), as well as in health centers.

The Secretary of State for Social Security and Pensions, Borja Suárez, has pointed out that “with this campaign, once again, Social Security shows its priority by providing care to citizens that facilitates to the maximum all the procedures to receive the benefits to which it is entitled. And what better way, as in this case, to always be proactive and bring Social Security closer to the citizens.”

Online application

To request the extension of the permit for birth and child care, the INSS makes available to citizens an online application, which allows to request these periods without having to travel, accessing from the portal prestaciones.seg-social.es the service of request of successive periods.

According to the information provided by the INSS, the beneficiary, who can make the request with a maximum of 15 days in advance, must notify his company at least 15 days in advance to issue and send the company certificate with the start and end date of the rest period. The managing body will also indicate that the management can be carried out through an authorized representative, who will make the request on behalf of the beneficiary.

Extension of the birth permit

Last July, the protection for parents and minors, co-responsibility if there are two parents, and the right to family and work conciliation were improved by approving the three-week extension of the birth and childcare leave, which went from 16 to 19 weeks and, in the case of single-parent families, to 32 weeks.

In particular, 17 weeks, of equal duration and non-transferable between both parents, and 28, in the case of single-parent families, may be enjoyed during the first 12 months of the baby, or, in the case of adoption, foster care or foster care, in the first year, from the judicial or administrative decision; in weekly periods or cumulatively.

In addition, families will be able to enjoy two additional weeks of childcare leave, four in the case of single parents, flexibly until the child reaches the age of 8. Families whose children were born on or after 2 August 2024 may be retroactively accommodated. This right may be requested from 1 January 2026.

The amount of these benefits is equivalent to 100% of the base of contributions for common contingencies of the month immediately before the month before the start of the rest.
