Más del 60% de las autorizaciones de residencia de personas ucranianas en España se concentra en cinco provincias

A total of 326,422 people of Ukrainian nationality have a residence permit in Spain, according to the latest report of the Permanent Observatory of Immigration (OPI) of the Secretariat of State for Migration, under the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.

More than 60% of Ukrainians and Ukrainians residing in our country are concentrated in just five provinces: Alicante (17%), Madrid (10%), Barcelona (13%), Valencia (10%) and Malaga (10%). As for autonomous communities, the Valencian Community hosts the largest number of Ukrainian people, followed by Catalonia, Andalusia and Madrid.

The Observatory has just published the analysis note on the Ukrainian population in Spain, which places a total of 326,422 Ukrainian people with residence documentation in force on June 30, 2025, that is, it has more than tripled since the beginning of the invasion. According to the IPO report, the number of temporary protection authorizations in force among persons of Ukrainian nationality is 234,240, 1,675 persons more than in the previous month.

As for residences granted for reasons other than temporary protection, most of them have a long-term residence permit (67,834 according to national regulations and 2,563 according to the EU Directive on long-term residents), followed by those with a permit for the rest of the reasons.

In addition, the extension is the most frequent type of authorization among Ukrainian nationals with valid residence authorization, reaching 206,673 persons, which means 63% of the total.

More detailed territorial information

One of the novelties introduced by this report is the possibility of filtering the information by province, which has allowed us to observe that five Spanish provinces concentrate more than 60% of the Ukrainian population with valid residence authorization.

Among the provinces that most welcome the most numerous groups are Alicante (17%), Madrid (14%), Barcelona (13%), Valencia with (10%) and Malaga with (10%).

If the focus is extended to the autonomous communities, the Valencian Community leads the number of Ukrainian people (94,863) followed by Catalonia (67,978), Andalusia (48,784) and Madrid (44,125), territories that have a Reception, Care and Referral Center (CREADE(, part of the Reception System of International Protection in Spain and that, prior to the beginning of the war, hosted groups of Ukrainian people who resided in our country.

A mostly feminine collective

Among children under 16 years of age, the gender distribution is fairly balanced and among the population over 65 years of age, the predominance of women is significant.

The female majority is largely explained by the arrival of adult women after the beginning of the war in Ukraine, although the collective already presented a feminized composition.

Labour insertion

Of the 181,589 temporary protection holders of working age, 19% are affiliated to Social Security (34,021 people). Among those with other residence permits, 51% are affiliated (42,906 people).

The sectors with the most employment among this group are Hospitality (6,526 affiliates), Construction (5,483), Commerce (3,654) and, also, Information and Communications (3,419).

The most frequent type of contract is the indefinite full-time (12,681 contracts; 37%), especially among men (48%). Among women, the indefinite part-time predominates (28%).
