La Seguridad Social suma más de 350.000 afiliados extranjeros en un año y supera los 3,4 millones en junio

Social Security has once again registered a maximum level of foreign affiliates both in terms of average and seasonally adjusted membership. Specifically, there are 3,446,178 affiliates on average in June, which means 86,630 more people than in the previous month and 350,163 more than a year ago. This figure puts the year-on-year variation at 11.31%, when the membership as a whole has grown by 2.8%.

If the seasonality and the effect of the calendar are discounted, Social Security already has 3,329,979 foreign affiliates, after adding 330,754 in the last twelve months.

“Foreign affiliation supports strategic sectors such as care, agriculture, construction, hospitality, transport or health and we see this in the affiliation data by sector,” explains Minister Elma Saiz.

Overall, the number of foreign affiliates has totaled more than 980,000 employed since June 2022. In fact, 44.5% of the employment created since the implementation of the labor reform corresponds to foreign workers.

Although the affiliation of foreign workers to Social Security shows great dynamism in the first half of the year, the rate of increase has been accelerating since the end of April, when the process of regularization of foreign persons was launched.

As of June 30, there were already 159,097 Social Security members as a result of the regularization process, the vast majority, 83.4%, in the General Social Security System. In addition, the indefinite contract is the modality that predominates among the new highs (77.3%).

By type of activity, these new highs that occur within the framework of regularization are concentrated in: Hotel Management (38,776), Commerce (20,195), Administrative Activities (19,327) and Construction (18,310).

Average affiliation

Of the 3,446,178 foreign affiliates, about 2 million are men (1,965,796), while the number of women is close to 1.5 million (1,480,382). The presence of working women from other countries is increasing overall and represents 43% of the total number of foreign workers.

28.5% of foreign affiliates come from European Union countries.

Morocco continues to be the country with the most members of the Spanish Social Security and already exceeds 422,000 contributors (422,347). It is followed by Romania (353,974), Colombia (316,460), Venezuela (239,892), Italy (223,500), China (133,098), Peru (122,633) and Ukraine (84,020).

“We see that its presence is diversifying and growing more and more in all sectors,” explains the minister. “They are very present in those of high added value such as Telecommunications, Programming and Informatics, in which they already represent more than 14% of the group of affiliates of the General Regime.”

Sectors of employed persons

Although they account for 15.4 per cent of all workers, the contribution of foreign workers is particularly relevant in some sectors of the General Social Security System. In Hospitality, they represent 31.5% of the members; in Agriculture, 28.9%; in Construction, they represent 25.9%; in Administrative Activities, 18.6% and in Transport, 18.2%. In addition, in the Special Household System, they account for 45.5% and in the Agrarian System, 41.7%.

In addition, it is necessary to highlight the high percentage of foreign workers with indefinite contracts, 87.8% of the total. If we compare it with the average percentage of the period 2017-2021, prior to the labor reform (41.1%) the data is even more striking.

In parallel, the temporary rate of this group of workers falls to historical lows, falling to 12.2% while the percentage of national affiliates with temporary contracts is 12.3%.

Entrepreneurship in highly qualified sectors

On the other hand, the number of self-employed workers continues to grow and stands at over 525,000 (525,478), which is 7.9% more than a year ago.

We must point out the growing presence of foreign workers who undertake in highly qualified sectors such as Telecommunications and Computer Programming, where they already represent 32.7% of the employed registered in this section of activity, that is, they are already one in three entrepreneurs. Also very important is its representation in other activities, such as Household Activities (27.5%), Hotel Management (25.5%), Administrative Activities (18.9%), Real Estate Activities (18.4%) and Construction (18.3%).
