Currently, there are more than 14 million employed with an indefinite contract, of which more than 9.6 million work full-time. They represent 3.5 million members (3,497,939) with an indefinite contract more since the approval of the labor reform.

In the last year, affiliates with full-time open-ended contracts grew more intensively (364,931 more) than part-time ones (89,498 more), while discontinuous fixed ones decreased (12,929 less).

In seasonally adjusted terms, membership has added up to more than 1.8 million workers since before the pandemic.

In July, the average affiliation (original series) also shows a very positive figure and remains close to 21.4 million affiliates (21,383,106), with 491,221 affiliates more than a year ago (+2.4%).

The Minister of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, Elma Saiz, values the data positively, since Spain “has been creating employment for 51 consecutive months”. And he adds: “It also consolidates the barrier of the 21 million that we surpassed in April, a milestone of mandatory valuation every month in which the record is maintained.”

In inter-monthly comparison, the sector that has grown the most in the General System is Health Activities and Social Services, with 49,133 more affiliates (2.6%), followed by Commerce (44,443). All the activities of the General Regime grow except Education and Other Services.

In year-on-year terms, the growth in Education stands out, with 143,314 more members (14.9%). Health Activities and Social Services have also increased especially in the last year, with 73,403 more people employed (3.9%); Commerce totalled 56,236 (2.2%) and Hotel Management, with 55,703 (3.5%).

The daily series has exceeded 21.4 million members for eleven days and continuously between July 15 and 25.

Higher growth in employment than the other large European economies

Job creation in Spain (+9.4%) exceeds that of the large European countries (France, +5.2%; Italy, +3.9%; Germany, +1.7%) compared to the level before the pandemic. The dynamism is also greater than in these countries since the beginning of the war in Ukraine. In Spain, it has grown by 7.4%, compared to 4.9% in Italy, 2.3% in France or 1.9% in Germany.

There are more than 10 million affiliated women

In July, an average of 10.05 million people were employed. The affiliates represent more than 47% of the total number of employed.

The growth of female employment is 11.8% since the year before the pandemic and exceeds by 4 points the increase produced among men, which is 7.8%. In year-on-year terms, women’s membership is also growing: 2.7%; compared to 2% of men.

The employment of young people also shows a dynamism above the average, with an increase of 15.5% since 2019, 5.9 points more than the total (9.6%), and 21.4% since the implementation of the labor reform, more than double the total increase (7.9%).

For its part, the number of self-employed workers has been at maximum levels since 2008. Last month, the number of self-employed members stood at 3,381,485.

Occupations of high added value

The increase in affiliation compared to the pre-pandemic level is especially intense in sectors with high added value, such as Information and Communication and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities. These activities also show significant growth in the first half of 2024, with increases of more than 4%, compared to 2.8% of the national average.

The dynamism of the labour market and the increase in the quality of employment is helping to strengthen the sustainability of the pension system, with an increase in social contributions of 7.5% in the first six months of the year, and the contributor to pensioner ratio stands at 2.43, maximum levels since 2011.
