La Seguridad Social suma 129.000 afiliados en abril y cierra el cuatrimestre con una creación de 420.000 empleos

The number of Social Security members increased by 128,824 people in April in seasonally adjusted terms and exceeded 20.6 million (20,661,195) for the first time. It is the best April since there are records and closes a four-month period in which 420,301 people have been occupied, which is also the best start of the year in the historical series.

The current level exceeds by almost 1.2 million people the number of members that existed before the start of the pandemic (February 2020).

The dynamism of employment in innovative activities is maintained

The growth of employment compared to the pre-pandemic level is notable in sectors with high added value such as Informatics and Telecommunications, whose number of affiliates has grown 21.6% compared to those registered before the pandemic, or Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities, which has a growth of 12.8%. Since the end of the pandemic, one in four new affiliates have joined these highly productive sectors.

All the autonomous communities have higher levels of employment than they had before the pandemic. The increase in membership in the southern half of the country and in the archipelagos stands out, with an increase in employment of more than 6.4%.

86%, with indefinite employment

Sixteen months after the entry into force of the labour reform, its positive effects on the stabilization of employment and the improvement of its quality remain evident.

In April, the percentage of affiliates with a temporary contract remained at the historical low of 14%, less than half of what was recorded before the reform (30%).

In the case of children under 30 years of age, the time limit has been reduced by 32 points compared to the level it had before the reform, from 53% to 21%.

Overall, there are now nearly 2.9 million more affiliates with an indefinite contract than in December 2021, the last month before the reform’s entry into force.

Another indicator of the increase in stability is the increase in the average duration of contracts that have caused loss. Between January and April of this year, it has grown by 62 days compared to the figures for the same period of 2019, the last homologable year prior to the impact of the pandemic.

Of the 4.1 million members who had a temporary contract in the first quarter of 2022 and are still on leave, 53% are undefined in April 2023; that is, 2.2 million. The majority, 1.8 million are ordinary indefinite, and 394,000 are fixed discontinuous. The sectors where the most temporary have become fixed are: Trade and Repair of Vehicles, Hospitality, Construction and the Manufacturing Industry.

On the other hand, the number of workers in ERTE remains at minimum levels, around 13,000, and they represent 0.1% of the total number of affiliates.

Average affiliation

Finally, in original terms, the average Social Security membership earned 238,436 members in April, which represents a year-on-month increase of 1.17%. It is the largest increase of average affiliates in a month of April and the second largest in absolute terms in the whole series (the highest corresponds to July 2005).

The number of average members stands at 20,614,989 (10,888,405 men and 9,726,584 women), the highest figure in the series. There are 595,908 affiliates more than a year ago, which represents a growth of almost 3% year-on-year.
