The average pension of the Social Security system stands at 1,363.4 euros per month in January, 4.5 percent higher than a year ago

Social Security has paid 10,452,674 pensions to more than 9.4 million people in the January payroll, which amounts to 14,250,714 million euros. pensions are now validated in Congress by the parliamentary groups in order to continue to apply.
In general, the increase foreseen and applied already in this pension is 2.7%, according to the average CPI between December 2024 and November 2025, the percentage of pensions applied is 6.75%. In this way, the maintenance of their purchasing power is guaranteed.
Average pensions
The average pension of the Social Security system is 1,363.4 euros this month, 4.5% more than in the same month of the previous year. This average includes the amount of the different types of pension (retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphanhood and in favour of family members). The average retirement pension, which receives more than two-thirds of the total number of pensioners (6.6 million people), is 1,563.6 euros per month.
By system, the amount of the average retirement pension from the General System is 1,724.1 euros per month, while in the Special System for Self-Employed Persons it is 1,054.4 euros. In Coal Mining, the amount of the average pension is 2,993.2 euros, and 1,728.1 euros in the Regime of the Sea. The monthly amount of the new retirement increases in the system amounted in November to 1,678.6 euros on average, according to the latest available data, which are from December.
In terms of the average widow's pension, in January it reached 971.9 euros per month.
Payroll and pensions by class
The monthly payroll of contributory social security pensions reached 14,250.7 million euros. Three quarters of the contributory pension payroll corresponds to retirement pensions, as usual. Specifically, these pensions account for 73.1% of the payroll, 10,424 million euros. A total of 2,282.6 million euros have been allocated to widows’ pensions, while the payroll for permanent disability benefits amounts to 1,320.6 million euros; the payroll for orphans, to 185.1 million euros and the payroll for family benefits, to 38.3 million euros.
Delayed pensions increase and anticipated pensions decrease
The data for 2025 continue to show a change of trend at the time of applying for retirement pensions, as delayed pensions increase and anticipated pensions decrease.
Between January and December 2025 new pensions have been registered. From the analysis of the data, it follows that the number of early retirements has decreased considerably and is below 30% of the total (27.9%), which is 12.1 percentage points less than in 2019, before the reforms implemented, when they represented 40% of the new retirements. In total, 104,655 early retirements have been discharged. 72.1% of the new retirees acceded with ordinary age (270,622).
In this same period, 10.9% of the retirees corresponded to the delayed retirement modality, compared to 4.8% in 2019. There are 40,952 highs of this type, while in 2019 they barely reached 14,000. As a result of the voluntary delay in the time of retirement and the lower advance, the average age of access to retirement is 65.3 years, when in 2019 it was 64.4. It should be remembered that in 2022 new incentives for late access to retirement came into force and the legal framework for early retirement was reconfigured.
The average time of resolution of the files in December (last data available) was 7.72 days in the case of retirement pension and 10.37 days in the case of widow's pensions. It must be taken into account that the maximum period of resolution in these procedures, according to RD 286/2003 of March 7 and RD 1192/2021, of August 3, is 90 days in both retirement and widow's benefits.
With supplement for the reduction of the gender gap
In January, 1,324,934 pensions have the supplement for the reduction of the gender gap, of which 78.9% of their holders are women (1,044,785). The average monthly amount of this supplement in the pension is 77.04 euros, which will be revalued by 2.7% over the amount recognized in 2025. Of the total supplemented pensions, 24.3% correspond to pensioners with one child (322,125); 49.2% to beneficiaries with two children (651,737); about 17.9% receive it with three children (236,658), and for four children, 8.6% (114,413).
This supplement, in force since February 2021, consists of a fixed amount of 33.20 euros per month per child, after the revaluation applied in 2024. The application must be made at the time when the pension is requested.
Passive Classes
On the other hand, the monthly payroll of Passive Classes pensions amounted to 3,378.24 million euros in the month of December (last data available), since it is the payroll that incorporates the extraordinary pay. This figure means an increase of 174.1 million euros compared to the previous year, 5.4% more.
The number of pensions in force was 736,075, which is 14,680 more pensions than in the same month of the previous year (2% annual variation).
