The average Social Security pension stands at 1,309.1 euros in April, 4.5% higher than a year ago

The Social Security has paid 10,324,244 pensions in the payroll of April, which has amounted to 13,515.2 million euros.
As for the number of pensioners, in April it remained above 9.3 million. Of these, 4.7 million are men and 4.6 million are women.
Average pensions
The average pension of the system reaches 1,309.1 euros per month, 4.5% more than in the same month of the previous year. This figure includes the amount of the different types of pension (retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphanhood and in favour of family members). The average retirement pension, which receives more than two thirds of the total number of pensioners (6.4 million people), is 1,503.3 euros per month.
By scheme, the average retirement pension from the General Scheme is EUR 1,663.2 per month, while in the Special Scheme for Self-Employed Persons it is EUR 1,007.8 per month. In Coal Mining, the amount of the average pension is 2,898.1 euros, and 1,663.3 euros in the Regime of the Sea.
For its part, the average widow’s pension is 933.5 euros per month.
As for the new retirement increases, the average amount of the system was 1,600.2 euros on average, according to the latest available data (March). In the General System, the pension for new arrivals amounted to 1,703 euros/month.
Payroll and pensions by class
The monthly payroll of contributory pensions reached 13,515.2 million euros in April. As usual, almost three-quarters of this figure corresponds to retirement pensions, which represent 73.1% of the total (9,882.3 million euros). A total of Euro2,192.9 million has been earmarked for widows ' pensions, while the payroll for permanent disability benefits is Euro1,225.8 million; the payroll for orphans is Euro178 million; and the payroll for family benefits is Euro36.1 million.
Delayed retirements grow
In the first two months of the year, 65,067 new retirement pension increases were recorded. Delayed retirements already account for 11.2% of the new hikes, more than double that in 2019 (4.8%). This change reflects the impact of the delay incentives in place since 2022 and the reconfiguration of the early retirement framework.
As a result of this change in trend, the average age of access to retirement is 65.1 years, compared to 64.4 years in 2019.
As for the resolution times of the files, in March (last data available) it was 10.6 days in the case of the retirement pension and 11.1 days in the case of widows’ pensions.
Supplement for the reduction of the gender gap
In April, 997,959 pensions include the supplement for the reduction of the gender gap, of which 88.7% are women (885,154). The average amount of this supplement is 75.5 euros per month.
Of the total number of supplementary pensions, 25.1% are pensioners with one child (250,229); 47.1% of the beneficiaries, with two children (470,149); 18.3% receive it for three children (182,791), and for four children, 9.5% (94,790).
This supplement, in force since February 2021, consists of a fixed amount per child, including the first, and must be applied for at the same time as the pension.
Passive Classes
On the other hand, the monthly payroll of pensions of Passive Classes amounted to 1,668.2 million euros in the month of March (last data available), which means an increase of 93.4 million euros compared to the previous year, 5.9% more.
The number of Passive Class pensions in force was 724,315, which is 14,332 more pensions than in February 2024, with a growth of 2% per year.
The State Passive Class System mainly includes military and civilian personnel of the General Administration of the State, the Administration of Justice, the General Courts and other constitutional or State bodies, as well as officials transferred to the autonomous communities.
