In August, Social Security paid a total of 10,379,303 pensions to 9,389,688 million people. The payroll, which this month amounts to 13,638.1 million euros, includes the different types of contributory pensions: retirement, widowhood, permanent disability, orphanhood and in favor of relatives.
The average pension of the system reaches 1,314 euros per month, which represents an increase of 4.5% compared to the same month of the previous year.
In particular, the average retirement pension, which receives about 6.5 million people (more than two-thirds of the total), stands at 1,508.7 euros per month, 4.4% higher than a year ago. 59.2% of the people who receive the retirement pension as the main benefit are men.
By scheme, the amount of the average retirement pension from the General Scheme is EUR 1,667.6 per month, while in the Special Scheme for Self-Employed Persons it is EUR 1,010.9 per month. In Coal Mining, the amount of the average pension reaches 2,907.7 euros, and 1,671.8 euros in the Special Regime for Seafarers.
For its part, the average widow’s pension is 936.3 euros per month. This pension is the main one for 1.5 million people, of which 95.7% are women.
As for the new retirement increases, the average amount of the system is 1,639.1 euros, according to the latest available data (August). Specifically, in the General System, the average pension for new retirement pensions amounts to 1,753.2 euros per month.
Payroll and pension by class
The monthly payroll of contributory pensions reached the figure of 13,638.1 million euros in August. As usual, almost three-quarters of them are retirement pensions, accounting for more than 73% of the total (9,969,135 million euros). A total of Euro2,197.3 million has been allocated to widows ' pensions, while the payroll for permanent disability benefits amounts to Euro1,256.5 million; the payroll for orphans amounts to Euro178.6 million; and the payroll for family benefits amounts to Euro36.5 million.
Delayed retirements increase
As of August (inclusive), the latest available data, 241,188 new retirement increases have been recorded. Delayed retirements already account for 11.3% of the total of these new hikes, compared to 4.8% in 2019. Overall, 72.8% of retirements occur at or after the normal retirement age, 13 percentage points higher than in 2019, thanks largely to incentives to bring the age of access closer to the legal retirement age.
Early retirements, for their part, fell by 12.8% in six years and only accounted for 27.2% of the total number of new retirements.
This change reflects the impact of the delay incentives in place since 2022 and the reconfiguration of the early retirement pension framework. As a result, the average age of access to retirement is 65.3 years, compared to 64.4 years in 2019. For women, the average retirement age is 65.8 years.
As for the average time for settling the files, in August (last data available) it was 9.4 days in the case of the retirement pension and 11.5 days in the case of widows’ pensions. It must be taken into account that the maximum period of resolution in these procedures, according to RD 286/2003 of March 7 and RD 1192/2021, of August 3, is 90 days in both retirement and widow’s benefits.
In September, 1,143,657 pensions include the supplement for the reduction of the gender gap, of which 85% correspond to women (972,493). The average amount of this supplement is 75.2 euros per month.
Of the total supplemented pensions, more than 24.7% are pensioners with one child (282,370), 47.9% of the beneficiaries, with two children (547,827); 18.2% receive it for three children (208,025), and for four children, 9.2% (105,435).
Passive Classes
On the other hand, the monthly pension payroll of Passive Classes amounted to 1,674.9 million euros in the month of August (last data available. Compared to the payroll for the same month of the previous year, the increase is 94.6 million euros (6% annual variation).
The number of pensions of the Passive Class System in force was 725,631, which is 14,288 more pensions than in August 2024, with growth close to 2% per year.
The State Passive Class System mainly includes military and civilian personnel of the General Administration of the State, the Administration of Justice, the General Courts and other constitutional or State bodies, as well as officials transferred to the autonomous communities.
