The European Commission has approved the granting for Spain of the National Programme of the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (FAMI) for the period 2021-2027. For this edition of the FAMI, the Commission has increased the amount by 10%, reaching the figure of 482 million euros.
The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (FAMI) has the general objective of promoting the effectiveness of the management of migratory flows, as well as the strengthening and development of a common policy on asylum and immigration, fully respecting the rights and principles enshrined in the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union.
These European funds support actions aimed at achieving the following common specific objectives:
- Strengthen and develop all aspects of the common European asylum system, including its external dimension.
- Support legal migration to Member States in accordance with their economic and social needs, such as the needs of their labour markets, while safeguarding the integrity of Member States' immigration systems, and encourage the effective integration of third-country nationals.
- Develop equitable and effective return strategies in Member States that contribute to the fight against illegal immigration, emphasising the sustainability of return and effective readmission in countries of origin and transit.
- Increasing solidarity and the sharing of responsibilities between Member States, in particular towards those most affected by migration and asylum flows, also through practical cooperation.
Thus, within the objectives of the FAMI, the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration will allocate 38% of the total to the Reception System, and, among other actions, to strengthen the care capacities in the Refugee Reception Centres (CAR) and in the Temporary Stay Centres for Immigrants (CETI).
In addition, the ministry plans to use 30% of these funds to support regular migration and contribute to the integration of third-country nationals in Spain. The measures included in this block are aimed at strengthening regular migration routes, increasing the participation and social inclusion of immigrants and reducing inequalities in areas such as unemployment, the cost of housing, access to health services or education.
