Average pensions

The average pension of the Social Security system is 1,366.2 euros this month, 4.5% more than in the same month of the previous year. This average includes the amount of the different types of pension (retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphanhood and in favour of family members). The average retirement pension, which receives more than two-thirds of the total number of pensioners (6.6 million people), stands at 1,566.8 euros per month, 4.4% more than in February 2025.

By system, the amount of the average retirement pension from the General System is 1,727.2 euros per month, while in the Special System for Self-Employed Persons it is 1,056.5 euros. In Coal Mining, the amount of the average pension is 2,996 euros, and 1,731.1 euros in the Regime of the Sea. The monthly amount of new retirement increases in the system amounted to 1,865.8 euros on average, according to the latest available data, which are from January.

As for the average widow’s pension, in February it reached 972.8 euros per month.

Payroll and pensions by class

The monthly payroll of contributory social security pensions reached 14,272.5 million euros. Three quarters of the contributory pension payroll corresponds to retirement pensions, as usual. Specifically, these pensions account for 73.2% of the payroll, 10,451.3 million euros. A total of Euro2,275.8 million has been allocated to widows ' pensions, while the payroll for permanent disability benefits amounts to Euro1,322.9 million; the payroll for orphans amounts to Euro184.4 million; and the payroll for family benefits amounts to Euro38.2 million.

Delayed retirement increases and early retirement decreases

The January data consolidate the trend of sustained growth in delayed retirements while reducing the number of early retirees.
During 2025, there were 375,324 new increases in retirement pensions, of which less than 30% were early retirements (27.9%), which is 12.1 percentage points less than in 2019, before the reforms implemented, when they represented 40% of new retirements. In total, 104,655 early retirements were discharged. 72.1% of new retirees acceded with ordinary age (270,622).

In this same period, 10.9% of those discharged corresponded to the delayed retirement modality, compared to 4.8% in 2019. There are 40,952 highs of this type, while in 2019 they barely reached 14,000. As a result of the voluntary delay in the time of retirement and the lower advance, the average age of access to retirement is 65.3 years, when in 2019 it was 64.4. It should be remembered that in 2022 new incentives for delayed access to retirement came into force and the legal framework for early retirement was reconfigured.

The average settlement time for the files in January (last available) was 17.82 days for the retirement pension and 14.85 days for widows’ pensions. It must be taken into account that the maximum period of resolution in these procedures, according to RD 286/2003 of March 7 and RD 1192/2021, of August 3, is 90 days in both retirement and widow’s benefits.

With complement for the reduction of the gender gap

In February, 1,367,995 pensions were supplemented to reduce the gender gap, of which 77.6% were women (1,061,238). The average monthly amount of this supplement in the pension is 76.95 euros. Of the total number of supplementary pensions, 24.3 per cent are pensioners with one child (331,812); 49.5 per cent are beneficiaries with two children (676,549); about 17.8 per cent are beneficiaries with three children (243,259); and 8.5 per cent are beneficiaries with four children (116,372).

This supplement, in force since February 2021, consists of a fixed amount of 33.20 euros per month per child, after the revaluation applied in 2024. The application must be made at the time when the pension is requested.

Passive Classes

On the other hand, the monthly pension payroll of Passive Classes amounted to 1,758.3 million euros in the month of January (last data available). This figure represents an increase of 98.8 million euros compared to the previous year, 6% more.

The number of pensions in force was 736,793, which is 14,412 more pensions than in the same month of the previous year (2% annual variation). This type of pension is received by 707,230 pensioners.

The State Passive Class System primarily includes military and civilian personnel of the General Administration of the State, the Administration of Justice, the General Courts and other constitutional or State bodies, as well as officials transferred to the autonomous communities.
