  • Together in the EU. Promoting the participation of migrants and their descendants
    • Synopsis

In March 2017, the European Union’s Fundamental Rights Agency presented this report on the integration of migrants, refugees and their descendants, which is crucial for the future of the European Union.  It thus focuses on non-discrimination, social cohesion, education, employment, learning languages, and political engagement. Thus far, the report is only available in English.

The host of terrorist attacks, uncertainty about increasing cultural and religious diversity, and concerns regarding economic horizons for young people provide fertile ground for toxic and hate narratives that can feed populist and xenophobic discourse making immigrants scapegoats. This can finally threaten to destabilize the entire “European Project”. As the 2004 Council guidelines acknowledge, integration involves the values and lifestyles of all those residing in the European Union, which requires efforts both from immigrants themselves and from the local population. Migrants and their descendants are already making a significant contribution to modern Europe. But more can be done to help them develop and realise their full potential.

Thus, as it highlights both the promising practices and the shortcomings of efforts made by member States to foster the participation of migrants and their descendants, this report aims to spark a clear and open debate on the issue and thus contribute to the formulation of a sustainable long term vision and decisive, effective action on migration in the EU to build a truly inclusive Europe based on rights and justice.
