    • Synopsis

This article written by Xabier Aierdi provides thought on the state of immigration in Spain and the need for integration. Spain traditionally had been a country of emigrants and had a highly uniform population. Over a very short period of time, the tables turned and, owing to a significant migratory inflow, Spanish society became plural.

A response from institutions is required in order to integrate recent arrivals. The author also presents Spain’s CIS barometer results that reflect an image of immigration very often based on information reaching Spaniards as opposed to actual fact.

The author analyses the various discourses on immigration and also presents a series of data presenting citizens’ personal profiles broken down by their attitudes towards immigration.
