  • Islam and immigration: elements for analysis and management proposals
    • Synopsis

This is a provisional version of the talk given by a professor of Arab and Islamic studies at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Ms Ana I. Planet Contreras. In her talk, she reveals how the proportion of Muslim immigrants is high, and that these immigrants have been characterised more by their religion than by their nationality. She signals that integration policies have focused more on labour than on religious aspects.

Research on Islam is misleading and incomplete because oftentimes it does not account for the actual plurality within Islam and differences involving sociological aspects more than faith.

The talk is divided into an introduction, background information on Islam, a discussion of plurality within Islam, an analysis of Muslims living as a minority in the West, a discussion of what the arrival of Muslims in Europe entails (i.e. migration, integration and conflicts); a section on the institutionalisation of Islam in Europe, another section on that same process in Spain, and a section on the Muslim immigrant community in Spain
