    • Synopsis

Muslims in the European Union: Discrimination and Islamophobia. Perceptions on discrimination and Islamophobia. Voices of members of Muslim communities in the EU. Excerpts from the European Union Monitoring Centre for Racism and Xenophobia (EUMC)

This document relates the need to understand Islam and what Islamophobia involves. The media have depicted a stereotypical image of Muslims, portraying them as a single mass, oftentimes violent. Muslims have been stigmatised and many times credentials attesting to their respect for Western values is demanded of them. National and international sociological studies point to increasing rejection of the Muslim community. Islamophobia has come to be presented as protection and self-defence.

The report stakes a claim for establishing a record of anti-Muslim crimes in order to be able to take the necessary measures.

The document has an introduction about Muslims in Europe entitled ‘Between Islam and Islamophobia’ written by Gema Martín Muñoz, Director of Casa Arabe. The second section deals specifically with Muslims in the European Union and discusses the social context, manifestations of Islamophobia and initiatives to promote integration. Lastly, the third section reveals concerns about discrimination and Islamophobia through the members of Muslim communities in the European Union.
