    • Synopsis

Discrimination against women is widespread in nearly all present-day societies including those with an Islamic tradition. Eradicating poverty and illiteracy is essential in their struggle to achieve their full rights. According to UNICEF statistics from 2003, Arab women and women from sub-Saharan Africa are those who suffer the most discrimination. However, their situation has somewhat improved, primarily due to changes in legislation.

The seminar included talks on the subject by specialised speakers who spoke about the participation of women in politics, economics, the media, society and culture and the participation of women of Islamic origin in Spain. The closing speech was given by Rosa María Peris, Director General of Spain’s Instituto de la Mujer (Women’s Institute).
