    • Synopsis

This study focuses on immigration in the Basque Country, which began at the onset of the 19th century when people from across Spain migrated there. Currently, immigrants come from countries outside the EU.

Because the media’s role is key in shaping public opinion, the way it depicts immigrants must be normalised and positive and must not based on stereotypes. This guide aims to serve as a tool for the media in their work to correctly convey information on immigration.

The report is divided into an introduction, a style manual for journalists prepared by the Catalonia Journalists’ Association for depicting ethnic minorities, and a series of recommendations to ensure immigrant women are present in the news. Suggestions are presented for dealing with news about immigrant minors, and a series of recommendations by the Catalonia Audio-visual Council are made with a view to depicting immigration in the news.
